Lie of comparison

Happy New Year! I pray that everyone’s new year is off to an incredible start. I took off over the holidays to enjoy extra time with my family. During that break, it allowed me time to reflect on the way I use social media, mainly Instagram and how it’s more of a blessing in my life, rather than something that is distracting or negative.

As a stay-at-home mom, it’s easy to feel isolated and overwhelmed with your 24-7 job, that’s why I enjoy the community of Instagram.
From the beginning, back in genesis 2 God said that “it’s not good for man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.” God designed people for relationships and to be in community together. Over the past years, I’ve developed many new healthy friendships through Instagram with other moms and women of faith. Even though I have never met some and we live in different states, we exchange Christmas cards and I truly enjoy watching their children grow up in their videos and posts. It’s also helped me to maintain friendships with family and friends who I don’t get the privilege of seeing each week. I’m so grateful for the little platform it has given me to share my heart on love light Mom life. While all these things are great, I wanted to get into how the lie of comparison and the enemy can sneak into our minds, on the daily, to kill, steal and destroy our joy.

It’s true that instagram is a highlight reel! Everyone puts their best of the best and I wouldn’t want it any other way. It’s one of the reasons why I don’t spend much time on Facebook anymore. I love seeing my friends highlights and sharing mines. In these past weeks I’ve seen thousands of strangers come together in agreement and prayer for a little boy and his family who have been battling with a life threatening sickness from E. coli. What strength and love that sweet family must feel in such tough times. Community is beautiful.

No matter who you are or where you are in life, you can’t say that there has never been a time where comparison hasn’t popped in your mind. It seems to storm in on the days where you’re the most vulnerable. Whether it be someone’s selfies, house, relationship status, fitness goals, or kids, that ugly lie of comparison will catch you off guard.
The comparison that can steal my joy is when it comes to motherhood. My oldest son Zion was a late talker. Up until he was three years old he could only say three words. We had him in speech therapy, and even though I had peace and knew he was fine, and that he just chose to communicate differently, I was plagued with the thoughts of his not speaking was because I was not being a good enough mother. I would see progress in his speech and then go on Instagram to see a one year old sing the “happy birthday” song to their parent, when yet my three year old would only say a handful of words. I hurt and feared for him, yet I felt like I was failing at raising him. It would eat at me everyday until I finally surrendered it to God. He gave me peace and I knew deep down that his speech delay had nothing to do with the way I was mothering him. A week later it was like a flood of words and sentences came to him and it was like he woke up saying Mom I’m ready to use my words. This matured me in my faith and opened my eyes up to how I would allow the enemy to take over my thoughts.
There’s still days where I will see a 1 year old child potty trained before my 2 year old, or another 2 year old already talking in full sentences. As these negative thoughts of me not doing enough as a mom come flooding in, I literally put my phone down, and I address the emotions I’m feeling. Instead of letting these thoughts make me feel inadequate, I use them to inspire me. “Wow, maybe instead of going out adventuring all week, I’ll make a commitment to stay home this week to focus on potty training my child.” Or “Instead of letting my boys watch their favorite “Cars”movie on repeat, we can sit down and practice the alphabet and sounding out words.” It takes me 2 minutes to reset and it doesn’t damper my feelings or self worth.

Malibu wine hikes

Last week my mom and I took a quick girls trip to L.A. to visit my sister. The highlight of our trip was doing the Malibu Wine Hike. It’s located on Saddlerock Ranch up in the mountaintops of Malibu. The views and picturesque backdrops felt like scenes out of a movie. This guided hike tour gets five stars and more! I can’t wait to return one day.

The Ranch offers different tours and hikes, but we chose the hike that lets you meet Stanley the giraffe, a famous giraffe and retired movie star! He’s known for being in the movie: Hangover 3.

The hike will cost you $65.00. It’s a 2.5 mile moderate hike that lasts for 2 hours. After finishing the hike, a shuttle will pick you up and drive you close to the Semler Malibu Winery to sample some wine tasting. The hike is mostly flat ground with some hills, nothing too strenuous. Your tour guide will take you all throughout the property where they will tell you about the history, sentimental value and special places of the ranch. Our tour guide was Sophia. She was very sweet and she let us take our time when we wanted to take pictures and she even gave us extra time with Stanley, as the day wasn’t too busy. We loved her! During the hike you get to feed lama’s, miniature horses, zebra’s, and of course Mr. Stanley the Giraffe. We even got to see camels and other amazing animals too.

The ranch is just breathtakingly gorgeous. They host weddings and special events often. I really loved the stories about the owner Ron Semler and his family. Every part of the ranch had some important significant value and meaning that tied to his family. You can really feel the love here.

Stanley was obviously my favorite part. He sure is a special giraffe. It’s very rare to be able to pet, feed, kiss, and just chill with such a miraculous and gentle creature.
After the hike, a shuttle took us, not even 5 minutes away, to the Semler Malibu Winery. This place is so cute and again has that rustic family oriented fun vibe. The wine was great and the music was good too. It made you want to get up and dance, but then again maybe it was just the wine!

As we did this in early November the weather was absolutely perfect and cool. We didn’t break a sweat. Flat and covered shoes are mandatory. Prior to the hike I noticed most people wearing athletic attire, but I wanted to dress up a little more for the pictures. I was worried I would look like Elle woods from the movie Legally Blonde coming to a hike too dressed up, but again the hike was not too strenuous and the temperature was cool.

Malibu and this ranch has a special place in my heart. What a beautiful city it is. I highly recommend you to visit Saddlerock Ranch and the Semler Winery the next time you’re in the area! I know you will make some magical and lifelong memories.

Your health is an investment not an expense.

This quote is something I live by with my family. Staying healthy is not just about having a good looking exterior, but it’s about living a rich life by feeling great from the inside out. Hoku and I had our first THRIVE experience and the effects were impressive.
What is THRIVE? Thrive is an 8-week lifestyle plan to help you achieve your peak physical and mental levels with just three easy steps.
-(2) Capsules
-(1) Lifestyle mix
-(1) Derma Fusion Technology (DFT) patch.

You take these three on the daily.
THRIVE provides many different health benefits. Each person experiences something different and I would love to share ours.

-To start your day, take (2) capsules on an empty stomach.

-Follow that with the lifestyle mix (shake). For best results, take the lifestyle mix 40 minutes after you take the (2))capsules.

-Place your DFT patch on the recommended areas of your body (shown in instructions) and you replace that every 24 hours.

I don’t know about you, but taking multi-vitamins on an empty stomach spooked me a little because of previous bad experiences. I was very surprised that I didn’t feel any types of nausea or queasiness from the capsules. After taking both capsules and the lifestyle mix, I could tell the difference immediately with my energy level from the very first day and it continued through each day of taking the products.

Zoey Grace littles

When my Zion was 9 months old, I purchased a shirt from a small business shop online. It was from that point on where I developed a love to fashionably dress him up with cute tees and stylish outfits. My mindset changed when I had a boy. Boys are equally as fun to dress up, just as much as girls are. I dreamt of creating my own kids tees line. I wanted it to be cute, stylish, reasonably priced, and something that had meaning. Since then, kids fashion and online shopping has grown tremendously, setting the bar and creativity standards quite high.

…Fast forward three years later, I was having one of those weeks where I just felt like I was in a funk. Getting lost in the daily routine. I remember praying to God and asking him for “opportunities”. I told Him I don’t know what that means or what I want specifically, but I just feel like I could use an opportunity! That night I went on a double date night with my friend Rachel Chantavong, owner of Shop Zoey Grace, an online Christian woman’s boutique. As we were talking during dinner she told me she wanted to come out with new children’s tees and was wondering if I wanted to collaborate ideas and do it together! I had never mentioned to her prior from that night about wanting to put a kids tees line out, so I knew it was God answering my request for an “Opportunity” to be His voice through our line. I couldn’t believe it! I was pretty thankful.

After months of collaborating ideas and visions, Rachel and I have designed four new t-shirts that we feel embodies what we want our children to represent. As she is already the owner of  Zoey Grace boutique, we decided to keep “Zoey Grace littles” as the brand name for our tees. Our mission is to spread Jesus’ love through our apparel. We hope that our shirts will bless others, shine His light and make a difference! My day job is loving my family. Rachel is a full time elementary school teacher. These shirts aren’t in hopes to become rich and filled with worldly successes, but to speak to others and reach them as our ministry.

Le Dîner en Blanc

We do this every year and it just keeps getting bigger, better, and more memorable! Dîner en Blanc is a classy large-scaled picnic, where the attendees learn of the secret location literally moments before they arrive! It was started in Paris nearly thirty years ago, where it now hosts over 10,000 guests every year in Paris alone! The main purpose of this event is to gather in a secret location while sharing a gourmet meal with friends at one of their city’s most spectacular and iconic locations, dressed elegantly in all white from head to toe. Many cities around the world have now participated in this epic annual all White party. This will be Honolulu’s 4th time and it’s been such an honor to have been a member all four years.

The key rules:
-In order to participate and attend you must be a member, or sponsored by a member from the previous year. Or, you can sign up for the waitlist, on their official site. (If you’re interested in attending one in 2018, I highly recommend you to sign up for the waiting list now.)
– Together the attendees arrive and depart by a chartered bus or organized public form of transportation. They must take all their belongings with them to the event, and leave with all of them at the end of the night. This includes any trash or leftovers they may have.
– Participants must bring: a table, two white chairs, picnic basket with a white tablecloth, napkins, a gourmet meal, dishwater, cutlery, and glassware. Wine and champagne are allowed, but beer and hard alcohol is prohibited.
-Dress code is elegant wear. All white and White only!

Once participants arrive at the secret location, they quickly set up their table, chairs, and decor. Then the fun quickly begins!
I love getting the chance to dress up with my husband and friends, take lots of pictures, laugh and dance the night away! Every year my friends and I bring different dishes and share our favorite cuisines. It’s broaden my taste buds and given me a new variety of ways I can be a better host even outside of the event!

“Shall we dance”

For our recent date night, Hoku and I took ballroom lessons for Marriage Mondays, an event our home church was hosting. Being that one of our favorite shows to watch is Dancing with the stars, we were so excited to learn the proper steps to the foxtrot. As we both have had some dance experience, we didn’t think it would be as challenging as it was. We enjoyed our time, but what really intrigued me was how much ballroom dancing correlates to a Christ centered Marriage. I just wanted to share some encouraging reminders of how to have a healthy marriage!

First off, in Ballroom, the Male always takes Lead. The woman follows his lead. When turning, he gently guides her to where they should go and is always looking out for what problems can occur on the dance floor, just like real life! He protects her. The female also can gently give him warnings or a squeeze if they’re headed to a collision or problem that he can’t see. They both rely on one another and most importantly they trust each other.
When in hold, both Male and female dance very close and they equally give their partners support. What was most challenging for me, is that you must have lots of patience! I felt like I was learning the steps a little quicker than Hoku, while he was still getting used to the unique counts. Just like in marriage, I sometimes feel that I have discernment about things that he may not understand. Just like noted before, the female can gently warn her partner, but we still have to be patient, pray, and have faith that our husbands will gain understanding.

I’m sure there is much more relevant points, but we only had a two hour class LOL. I hope this was a great reminder and a blessing to your marriage as it was to mines❤️

Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to The Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything. Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her
‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭5:22-25‬ ‭

Aloha for Jesus

It was such a pleasure to meet the owners of “Aloha for Jesus” this past weekend, at the Bloom conference, in Honolulu. I love supporting small kingdom minded  businesses, especially when they’re owned by Mom’s?

Aloha for Jesus is a fresh new Christian apparel company! They have a passion to share the Love and light of Jesus with a Local-Hawaiian flare.
I really love the simplicity of the design and how bold and clearly the love and praise for Jesus is portrayed! They have both women and men tees that are extra soft and cool for this hot summer weather. They also have a variety of hats, totes and purses.

Check out their website at and follow them on Instagram at @alohaforjesus

Summer fashion ’17

Shop Zoey Grace Summer Collection has arrived and will be released online very soon, just in time for the first official day of Summer this June.

I am honored to be a Brand Ambassador for Zoey Grace, a small online boutique that aims to empower women to be bold, brave, and beautiful in their walk with Christ. I wouldn’t represent anything less than what I thought was fashionable, yet tasteful.
In this collection, you’ll be sure to see lots of blush tones (Which is one of my favorite colors to wear!). Not to mention, the infamous lace honey punch romper, which is a staple piece for a date night or mommy’s night out!

Stay tuned and don’t forget to follow Shop Zoey Grace on Instagram for updates and promos. @shopzoeygrace

Pure barre Honolulu • lift •tone•burn

Staying healthy + fit has always been a top priority for me. Even before and after having my boys. It’s a challenge for any mom to carve out extra time for herself, let alone make it to the gym. My personal body goal is to not just be skinny, but to be lean with muscle definition, like I was before kids. Realistically, that would mean I would need to get to the gym 5x a week on top of dancing at night 5x a week to get my pre-baby bod back. That’s just not practical with my current schedule. I knew I needed something to amp up my workouts, but not take up too much time out of my day. That’s when I heard about Pure barre.

Pure barre is a 55 minute full body workout class. It’s low impact technique is designed to tone certain body parts while protecting your joints. A ballet barre is incorporated to help you with tiny isometric movements when working your thighs, seat, and abs. No prior dance experience is necessary to take a pure barre class. They promise you’ll see results by your 10th class, but I noticed major body changes by my 6th class. What’s great about pure barre is that no class is ever the same. You always get a full body workout, but the combos are always changing. You can never plateau because you always can go deeper, and bend lower, etc. You will hear terms like tuck, pulse, heavy tail bone, and find your shakes. Why do you want to shake like you’re in below zero cold weather? The shaking means your muscles are reaching the point of fatigue which is a good thing! The more you shake the faster you will get results. After working out each body section you will stretch out, to elongate your muscles which leads to long and lean muscles.

Before starting my first class, I didn’t know what to expect, let alone, even know if I would like it. I had no clue how hard it was going to be. In a good way it humbled me! After weightlifting for years and having trained for two bodybuilding competitions, there’s no way I thought it would even compare…Boy was I wrong! Through all my bodybuilding training sessions I’ve never pushed myself so hard in a full-body workout, in such a short amount of time, like I do at pure barre. I started my pure barre journey the first week of February. It’s been about four months now and it’s crazy how fast my body has responded. I feel like I’m in the best shape of my life, and I love my body results even more now than I did before I had kids.

Laying low at the Laylow

This past week we celebrated Hoku’s 35th birthday at the Laylow Autograph collection hotel. It’s newly renovated and a brand new Marriott hotel located on Kuhio street in Waikiki. They just opened in late March of this year, after seeing their photos, I knew we needed to check this place out. I’m so glad that we chose Laylow for our staycation, as it did not disappoint!

Upon arrival, the valet attendants warmly greeted us and assisted us to the elevator to get up to the lobby. This place is classy, where modern+ vintage Hawaii collide. As we checked in at the front desk, they immediately asked if we were celebrating anything special. After notifying the front desk of Hoku’s birthday, they then said that we would be able to have a late checkout because of it! With our stay, we got a free $50.00 voucher for any tours or activities that they have available through their concierge.

(A few weeks before our stay, I got an email from the activity concierge who just wanted to thank us for choosing to stay with them, and to see if I needed any assistance with restaurant reservations or tour activities. I thought that was a very personal way to welcome us before we even got there.)
As the front desk handed us our keys, she notified us that we had a complimentary basket in our room and that everything in the basket was ours to keep no charge.
When we walked into our room we immediately fell in love with the unique decor. The wallpaper is a cute vibrant pop of teal + pink monstera leaves. Everything in the room and bathroom were very impressive with that modern yet mid-century Hawaiian feel.

During the duration of our stay, every employee we encountered were so kind to us, but most importantly, to our boys. We never felt unwelcomed because we had kids with us or felt like we needed them to keep them quiet.
The pool was one of my favorite parts of our stay. It’s beautiful! They have these unique loungers in the pool that both Zion and Mateo enjoyed to splash around on. It felt very secluded and one day we had the whole pool to ourselves.

The night of Hoku’s birthday we had dinner reservations in the new International Market Place. The walk over was literally 2 minutes tops. The hotel is conveniently located between Nordstrom rack and the international market place. After dinner, we stopped by the Hideout in The Laylow hotel, located in the lobby and pool level. They have live music every night with such a wonderful ambience. They even have an area with a sand and fire pit that you can reserve for parties. As Hoku and I enjoyed a drink there, our server recognized that it was Hoku’s birthday because of his Lei he was wearing, and brought out a delicious bread pudding dessert on the house. This definitely surpassed our expectations.

In the mornings we enjoyed coffee and pastries from their little coffee shop. The worker was yet again a sweetheart to us and played with the boys while they sat in the stroller, and as she was making our order. I love that they even had spam musubis available, which made an easy meal at the pool.

Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our stay! We loved it so much, I already booked another stay in the month of June for my birthday. We got a good rate through Expedia, but they also have Kamaaina rates if you live locally on the islands. A bonus thing is this is a pet friendly hotel for those of you who love to bring your fur babies wherever you go.
